Distance: 4 miles/6km

Type of Walk: This route starts with a climb high up on to the the side of the Exe Valley, with beautiful views of the valley and the River Exe, as well as the sea on a clear day. The second half of the route is relatively flat and follows the valley floor, past Bickleigh Castle and Bickleigh Bridge all the way up to the front of the Bickleigh Mill.

There's a regular bus service between Exeter and Tiverton which passes Bickleigh, some buses diverting through Thorverton.

Northbound:

  1. From the small green in the centre of Thorverton take the minor road which climbs gently from the main road.
  2. Carry on along the lane, going left at the first farm track, which climbs, then descends to a crossroads.
  3. Go straight ahead at this crossroads, climbing steadily, then, keeping on the lane, descend steeply back to the floor of the Exe Valley.
  4. Pass Bickleigh Castle, and continue ahead at the road junction. Be wary of traffic on this stretch.
  5. Cross the bridge to the main road at Bickleigh .
  6. Cross the Exe on Bickleigh Bridge the fork left down the minor road to Bickleigh Mill.
  7. Stop for refreshments in Bickleigh or continue to the right of the Mill to follow the next stage of the Exe Valley Way.
