Uplowman is a small, peaceful parish located about four miles northeast of Tiverton, set within the rolling Mid Devon countryside. The idyllic village lies at the centre of the parish and offers beautiful views across farmland, meadows and gentle hills. With Tiverton Parkway Railway Station just four miles away on the Great Western main line, and easy connections to the Grand Western Canal, Uplowman is an ideal rural escape with excellent transport links.

Uplowman enjoys a lively community spirit with several annual events. The Uplowman Women’s Institute Flower Show takes place each July, and nearby Bolham hosts the Mid Devon Show, the district’s largest agricultural event featuring livestock, food, entertainment, crafts and arena attractions. August brings the Uplowman Show, which includes a historic vehicle gathering, dog show, stalls and games.

Visitors can explore the 15th‑century Church of St Peter’s, featuring a wooden lectern placed in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. The surrounding countryside is perfect for gentle walks, and on calm days you may spot hot air balloons drifting across the Mid Devon sky. National cycle routes pass through nearby Sampford Peverell along the Grand Western Canal, offering tranquil cycling opportunities.

For food and drink, the Redwoods Inn offers lunchtime and evening meals, including senior lunches and takeaway options. Additional dining choices can be found in neighbouring Sampford Peverell, which has two popular pub restaurants.

History & Places of Interest:

  • Neolithic Heritage: The long barrow at Craze Lowman once contained ancient artefacts, including axe‑handle remains.
  • Lady Margaret Beaufort: Mother of King Henry VII and former resident of the area, she commissioned Uplowman’s parish church.
  • Royal Visit: HRH Princess Margaret attended a christening at St Peter’s Church for her godson who lived at Uplowman House.
  • Historic Leat: An early water‑management feature running through the village, originally feeding Sampford Peverell’s mill.
