The beautiful historic parish of Oakford lies north of Tiverton, close to the edge of Exmoor National Park. Although not open to the public, Oakford’s ancient Manor House has remained in the same family for more than 800 years, adding to the parish’s deep sense of heritage. With excellent access from Junction 27 of the M5 and the nearby Tiverton Parkway Railway Station, Oakford is both rural and conveniently located — an ideal base for exploring Mid Devon and the Exmoor landscape.
Surrounded by wooded valleys, rolling hills and open countryside, Oakford offers countless opportunities for scenic walks. Many routes begin and end in the centre of the village at the highly regarded Red Lion Hotel. For those looking for high moorland views, Exmoor’s dramatic landscape is just a short drive away, where wild deer and the famous Exmoor ponies can often be seen grazing.
Oakford provides a peaceful countryside escape with activities for outdoor lovers, families and visitors seeking authentic rural experiences. Just east of the village lies Bellbrook Valley Trout Fishery, renowned nationally for its excellent fly fishing and tranquil lakes. Oakford is also home to the highly regarded Stuckeridge Shoot, attracting visitors from the UK and abroad for its exceptional pheasant shooting drives across Oakford and neighbouring Stoodleigh.
Food and drink are an enjoyable part of an Oakford visit. The village centre is home to the Red Lion Hotel, offering high‑quality dining with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and comfortable guest accommodation — perfect after a day of walking. Oakford is also well placed for the Exmoor Food Festival, held each February, during which local restaurants offer outstanding dishes at special prices.
Families and visitors can also enjoy time at the Oakford Community Field, where children can play on the equipment or simply run around in the open space, while adults can arrange a game of pétanque with the Parish Council.
