Holcombe Rogus is a picturesque Mid Devon village set amid rolling countryside and peaceful rural landscapes. The village lies within the historic Hundred of Bampton and the Deanery of Tiverton. Its name reflects its long history — Holcombe comes from Old English meaning a deep or hollow valley, while Rogus refers to Rogo, the landholder recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Surrounded by open farmland and gentle hills, Holcombe Rogus is an ideal destination for visitors seeking tranquillity, heritage and countryside exploration.
Holcombe Rogus offers a rewarding blend of history, architecture and scenic walking. At the heart of the village stands St Mary’s Church, a fine example of medieval parish architecture. Dedicated to St Mary, the church features a blend of Norman and Gothic elements, including an impressive 13th‑century font, making it a highlight for those interested in history and craftsmanship.
Nearby is Holcombe Court, described as “the most spectacular example of the Tudor style in Devon.” Originally built by Sir Roger Bluett, this historic house has been home to several notable families over the centuries. While privately owned, its architectural significance and historic reputation add to the village’s strong sense of place.
The surrounding countryside is perfect for walkers. One of the most popular routes is the Burlescombe to Holcombe Rogus Walk, which takes visitors through classic Mid Devon scenery of farmland, hedgerows and quiet lanes. The area’s gentle terrain and open views make it enjoyable for both leisurely strolls and longer countryside walks.
