The parish of Hockworthy, which includes the hamlets of Staplecross and Waterslade, is a peaceful rural community with a warm village atmosphere. Staplecross is home to the local pub, while the surrounding area is characterised by rolling Devon countryside, wooded hillsides and farmland. The name “Hockworthy” comes from Old English, meaning “Hocca’s Enclosure.” During the Elizabethan era, “enclosure” referred to the dividing of once‑common land into privately owned plots — a practice that shaped much of Devon’s rural landscape.
Hockworthy offers a relaxing countryside escape with a blend of heritage, tranquillity and unique rural stays. For those seeking a peaceful retreat, Deer Barn Retreats provides an off‑grid style glamping experience enhanced with thoughtful comforts such as cosy bedding, phone‑charging facilities, local produce and well‑equipped bathrooms.
The parish is also home to the Church of St Simon and St Jude, a beautiful Grade II* listed church set on a hillside and dating back to at least 1161. Its tower was rebuilt in 1864, but much of the historic character remains. Visitors interested in local history can purchase the church’s detailed historical booklet, which includes grave records from Elizabethan times onward.
For food and drink, The Staple Cross Inn in the nearby hamlet of Staplecross offers a full à la carte menu of classic pub dishes as well as lighter options. With a welcoming pub garden, it’s an ideal place to relax on sunny days and enjoy the friendly village atmosphere.
