Eggesford is an idyllic parish set in the heart of the Mid Devon countryside, lying alongside the peaceful River Taw. Positioned halfway along the scenic Tarka Line railway route between Exeter and Barnstaple, it is a wonderful place to pause your journey, stretch your legs, and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Visitors can also stop for refreshments at the Station Yard Farm Shop and browse their excellent farm shop stocked with local produce.
Eggesford offers a relaxing countryside break with plenty of opportunities for nature‑spotting, gentle walks and local food. At the Station Yard Farm Shop visitors can enjoy a whole range of local produce. A short distance away, the Eggesford Garden and Country Centre provides a calm shopping experience with a restaurant serving hearty home‑cooked dishes.
Just two miles away in Wembworthy, the Lymington Arms offers delicious hot and cold meals in a friendly country pub setting. Eggesford also provides excellent accommodation options, including the Fox and Hounds Country Hotel, which combines traditional charm with relaxing countryside comfort. For something truly unique, visitors can stay in the hotel’s Treetops Treehouse or book a stay at The Old Ticket Office, a beautifully converted railway building set directly on the active station platform.
Walking opportunities are plentiful. From the station, visitors can take a gentle 2.5‑mile circular walk through Eggesford Forest, a beautiful woodland of towering Douglas firs — some planted as early as 1840. With its varied trails, peaceful glades and abundant wildlife, the forest makes a perfect destination for families, dog walkers and nature lovers.

This is low level walking with few or no gradients. This may be along a road or tarmacked path. Suitable for all levels of walkers, pushchairs and wheelchair users. Comfortable shoes or trainers can be worn.
For reasonably fit walkers with no mobility or specific health problems. Some gradients or uneven terrain. May include unsurfaced rural paths through woodlands or fields and may have a style. The route maybe less obviously marked in some sections. Walking boots and warm waterproof clothing are recommended.
Good level of fitness and walking experience, some steep climbs and open country with less well marked sections of the route. Unsurfaced rural paths with rough and uneven terrain. For very experienced and fit walkers only, will need to use compass and map, could have steep inclines and uneven terrain, may need additional technical skills eg scrambling, crampons etc. You must plan your walk beforehand.
