Clayhanger is a peaceful rural village set on the border between Somerset and Devon. As you approach through its quiet lanes, the 14th‑century tower of St Peter’s Church rises above the secluded valley, creating a striking first impression against the unspoilt countryside. The village is also home to its own Manor House, once owned by Thomas de Nutcombe in 1620 and later by Richard Nutcombe, Sheriff of Devon from 1715–16. Inside St Peter’s Church, the memorials of the Nutcombe family and other notable local families line the aisle, including Richard’s inscription honouring his steadfast principles during a turbulent age.
Clayhanger’s tranquil setting and surrounding landscape make it an inviting destination for those seeking peaceful escapes, countryside walks and historic interest. A visit to Wellhayes Vineyard, set on the edge of the Brendon Hills, offers a memorable afternoon out. Pre‑booked vineyard tours (held at 3pm on Wednesdays and Sundays between May and September) include a guided walk through the vines and winery, a complimentary glass of Wellhayes Sparkling Wine, and samples of their handmade chocolates — with an optional cream tea available for an added treat.
The beautiful Grade II* listed St Peter’s Church provides insight into centuries of village history and is a highlight for visitors interested in architecture and heritage. Just a short distance away, the nearby village of Shillingford is home to Four Ponds Fishery, a mature and peaceful fishing destination offering three well‑stocked lakes surrounded by 12 acres of scenic Devon countryside. With an on‑site caravan and camping area, tackle shop and visitor facilities, it’s ideal for anglers of all levels.
