Tiverton & The Exe Valley

A town of two rivers, the Exe and the Lowman, with a treasure trove of history. Home to the Grand Western Canal Country Park.

Tiverton is a town full of charm with a treasure trove of history and heritage just waiting to be explored.

Tiverton’s central location makes it an ideal base for exploring Devon and the place to escape to if for a rural holiday. Surrounded by countryside walks, wildlife and traditional thatched villages like Bickleigh and Thorverton dotted along the picturesque Exe Valley.

Stroll along the Grand Western Canal, a popular beauty spot perfect for walking or cycling stretching for 11 miles. Quench your thirst en route in the attractive villages of Halberton and Sampford Peverell. There’s lots of wildlife to spot or take a leisurely trip on one of the country’s last horse-drawn barges. Get a permit from the Canal Ranger Service and explore the canal by canoe, kayak or stand up paddle board.

National Cycle Network Route 3 runs through the town and it is a popular stopping off point on the Land’s End to John O’Groats route. There are a number of guest houses and eateries geared towards cyclists. The Exe Valley Way walking route, which runs the length of the river valley from the Exe Estuary to the village of Exford, also passes through the town. Tiverton is ideal for a holiday with your dog, with several dog-friendly hotels and places to eat in and around the town.

There are plenty of activities to entertain children; Tiverton Adventure Playground, indoor top-rope climbing centre The Wall in the Hall, a BMX track and a skate park as well as several spacious parks with playground equipment. Tiverton is also home to Exe Valley Leisure Centre, which has an indoor pool, tennis courts and many bookable activities.

Visit Tiverton Castle, a royal fortress, or the 11th century moated Bickleigh Castle. Discover the town’s historical buildings following a heritage trail. National Trust’s Knightshayes Court, a fine example of Gothic Revival, overlooks the town. Glimpse further into the region’s past by heading to the award-winning family friendly Museum of Mid-Devon Life, full of quirky exhibits.

Spend an afternoon exploring the many interesting independent shops and boutiques, taking in the character of each of the four shopping quarters. There are also a number of antiques shops and art galleries to browse. Don’t miss a visit to the historic Pannier Market where you can discover handmade crafts, local produce and find unique gifts. Choose one of the town’s many inviting eateries for a coffee break, spot of lunch or a relaxing evening meal.
