The Grand Western Canal Country Park and Local Nature Reserve meanders for 11¼ miles through beautiful countryside and quiet villages between Tiverton and the hamlet of Lowdwells (near the Somerset border).

The Canal is perhaps best known for its horse-drawn barge, Tivertonian. Visitors have been enjoying the tranquillity of its leisurely cruises for more than 50 years. Trips depart from the Canal Basin in Tiverton, where you will also find cafes, boat hire, a play area and a visitor centre.

The Canal’s fascinating heritage covers more than 200 years and many of its original structures and features still survive.  It is home to some special wildlife and is a perfect place to explore on foot, by bike, by wheelchair / mobility buggy, or to go boating, canoeing or fishing. Loved by visitors and locals, the canal provides a great day out at any time of the year.

Accessible Angling platforms are located at various points through the Country Park. Angling rights on the Grand Western Canal are leased to the Tiverton and District Angling Club.

New for 2026 is a nature trail featuring 26 rubbing plaques on posts dotted along the length of the canal – pick up a leaflet in the visitor centre for more details!
