The Grand Western Canal rewards repeat visits!

From the free car park at Tiverton Road Bridge on the edge of Halberton, this time heading towards Tiverton rather than on the Swan`s Neck loop, a short, peaceful stretch of towpath as far as the Aqueduct. Early mornings here are particularly lovely, with good reflections on the water and the canal largely to yourself.

It`s not the longest canal, but there`s real variety to be found along it depending on where you start and how far you go, well worth exploring in sections.

A National Trust garden is never quite the same twice, which is a very good excuse to keep going back!

National Trust Knightshayes is looking beautiful right now, and if you can time your visit for when the gardens open at 10am, before the house opens at 11am, you`ll often find it at its quietest and most peaceful.

The Victorian Gothic house is a striking backdrop, the gardens are extensive and full of interest, and dogs are welcome throughout the grounds and garden on short leads..

The Grand Western Canal Country Park basin in Tiverton is a lovely starting point for an easy, flat walk along the towpath, go as far as you like and turn back when you`re ready. The canal sits above the town, so there are lovely views across Tiverton and the surrounding countryside as you go.

Keep an eye out for wildlife, dragonflies, butterflies, waterbirds, kingfishers, and you might even spot the Tivertonian horse-drawn barge, which makes regular trips along the canal.
